In Alvarez a lot of monsters are known to prey on unsuspecting victims, just like in Ishgar. However, one of the monsters is both a lake and a forest that drive those who breathe the air in the forest and drink the water of the lake to go insane, becoming victims to the 'spirit of the lake' and the 'spirit of the forest' only for it to later be revealed that they both only function as such due to a curse put on both the land and the water by someone to thwart people from heading into the town found past them both, because the town is filled with cannibals who burn magic users at the stake through unconventional means.
